The current one is R-454B, and the headlines around it — flammable refrigerant! prices up!— manage to alarm people about the wrong things while skipping the one that actually costs money. Why the industry switched at all

R-410A — the refrigerant in most home ACs installed since the mid-2000s — is an HFC with a global warming potential (GWP) around 2,088, meaning a pound of it leaked to the atmosphere warms the planet roughly two thousand times more than a pound of CO2. The federal AIM Act of 2020 put HFCs on a stepped production phasedown — an 85% cut over about fifteen years — and set a low-GWP requirement for new residential equipment that took effect with the 2025 model transition.

R-454B is the industry's main answer: GWP around 466, roughly a 78% reduction, with performance close enough to R-410A that system designs carried over with modest changes. By the end of the R-22 era, homeowners were paying more to refill a dying system than the refill was worth — sometimes hundreds of dollars a pound, into equipment with one foot in the scrapyard. A typical residential system holds 6–12 pounds. You can see where this goes.

It's already baked into current AC and heat pump pricing, and unlike R-410A recharge costs, it isn't compounding every year. What to ask an installer about A2L handling

R-454B installs are routine for a competent shop in 2026, but the transition did add real requirements. A few questions that separate the prepared from the winging-it:

  • "Is your team trained and equipped for A2L refrigerants?" That means A2L-rated recovery machines, gauges, and leak detectors — not the R-410A kit with a new sticker.
